Monthly road crash statistics update - July 2016

The data presented here are provisional. Crash data as at 8th August 2016.

  • Seventeen people died on New Zealand roads in July. This is 9 fewer than July 2016 and 5 fewer than the average July road toll for the last five years.Graph showing July road deaths

  • To the end of July this year, 188 people have died on New Zealand roads. This is 1 more than at the same time last year.

  • In the 12 months to the end of July 2016, 320 people died on our roads. This is 6 more than the 12 months to the end of July 2015.
  • During July, 8 of the deaths were car or van drivers, 4 were passengers, 3 were motorcyclists and 2 were pedestrians.

  • Sixteen of the 17 deaths were in open road crashes. Seven were in head-on collisions and 6 were in single vehicle crashes in which a driver lost control of the vehicle or ran off the road.

  • Of the 12 vehicle occupants who died, 5 were not restrained at the time of the crash.

Deaths are for the 12 months to the end of July 2016. Reported injuries are for the 12 months to the end of February 2016.

Note: Preliminary fatal crash reports are submitted within 24 hours of a crash related death. Full injury crash reports are submitted only after the crash investigations are completed, so there is a lag in the reporting of injury crashes.

Graph showing casualties and vehicle fleet compared to 1990Since 1990 the number of vehicles on the road has increased by 69 percent while Police reported injuries have dropped by 27 percent, road deaths have dropped by 57 percent and the number of days spent in hospital as a result of road crashes has dropped by 58 percent.
